Melvin Xu, 16, is a rising junior at Northview High School and currently studies piano with Anne Sun. His past teachers include Dr. Elena Cholakova and Dr. Rachelle McCabe.
Melvin has been named Conference Recitalist at the Georgia Music Teachers Association (GMTA) State Auditions five times (2020–2022, 2024-2025). In the 2024–2025 season, he received First Prize in the Atlanta Music Club Scholarship Competition (High School Piano), Silver Medal in the Vienna International Music Competition, First Place in the Jo Evans Memorial Scholarship Competition, Gold Medal in the Southeast Young Artist Piano Competition, and was named Conference Recitalist in the GMTA State Piano Concerto Auditions. Additional honors include the Special Judges Award in the 2023 National League of Performing Arts International Young Artists Competition, First Place in the 2023 Bellagrande International Music Competition, and the Romantic Impressionistic Piano Competition. He has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Emerson Hall at Emory University, Spivey Hall, Marvin Cole Auditorium, and Cypress Center for the Arts.
Melvin is an active chamber musician and collaborator. In 2024, he participated in the Juilliard Performing Arts Summer Camp, performing with musicians from around the world. As pianist of the Clark Quartet, he was awarded the School Prize in the 2024 Franklin Pond Chamber Music Competition. He currently performs with the Strelitzia Trio, which was named Grand Prize Winner of the 2025 Franklin Pond Chamber Music Competition and Semifinalist in the 2025 Coltman National Chamber Music Competition.
